Montana Senator  Jim Peterson's bill makes the Code of the West from the James P. Owen book "Cowboy Ethics:  What Wall Street Can Learn from the Code of the West", the official Montana Code.  Other states should follow suit when you think of the antics of many politicians, businessmen, celebrities, those people we used to admire....those people our children and grandchildren now see in a different light and yet, some, still try to emulate.

The Code, by the way, is filled with common sense of "being tough but fair".  It's supported by Gene Autry's Code of Honor, "a cowboy always tells the truth"; and Hopalong Cassidy's Creed for American Boys and Girls stating,  "If you want to be respected, you must respect others"; and the Lone Ranger Creed shares,  "That God put the firewood there, but that every man must gather and light it himself".  Roy Rogers Riders Cub Rules included "Always respect our flag and our country".

The ten points of the recently adopted Code of the West are all valuable but #6 is my personal favorite.  Which one's yours?  Check them out below.

1.  Live each day with courage.

2.  Take pride in your work.

3.  Always finish what you start.

4.  Do what has to be done.

5.  Be tough, but fair.

6.  When you make a promise, keep it.

7.  Ride for the brand.

8.  Talk less and say more.

9.  Remember that some things aren't for sale.

10.  Know where to draw the line.
