The crew of the International Space Station scrambled for cover in their respective Soyuz Spacecrafts early Saturday morning when they were awoke to an alarm. A discarded Soviet rocket was detected inbound and was expected to make contact with the ISS. It ended up being one of the closest that has ever approached the manned space station. Although the space junk was not visible to the astronauts, it was detected within 9 miles of the space station which made it a near-miss in space terms. This is the third time that astronauts have had to evacuate the space station into the escape pods. Crews do this in case there is a direct hit, so they can escape if need be.
