Every once in awhile there a song that comes along that sounds as great today as it did when it was first released. That's the case today on the "retro rack".

Sammi Smith moved the Nashville in the mid 60's. She got a contract with Columbia Records and although she had some songs that charted, nothing went into the Top 50.

In 1970 everything change for Sammi Smith with she recorded a song written by Kris Kristofferson called "Help Me Make It Through The Night".

At the time it was a little edgy for a country singer but it became a monster hit, staying at Number One on the country charts for three weeks. It crossed over to the pop charts and made it to the Top Ten.

The song won the single of the year award at the CMA's in 1971. It also earned both Smith and Kristofferson each a Grammy award.

Smith recorded some other hit songs with just a few hitting the Top Ten, both nothing as big as "Help Me Make It Through The Night.
