No other artist turned more people on to country music that Garth Brooks. He has sold over 128 million albums. Before he stepped back from the spotlight, Garth was number one.

I remember when he first started. I was working at another radio station at the time and Garth was performing in town at a local club. He had a couple of songs on the radio but I really had no idea how popular he was.

That all changed when I met up with him at the old K-Mart on University Ave where Trinity Christian school is now. He was signing autographs and the line went from the record department, winding back through the store and out the door.

He stayed there until everyone got an autograph, almost 3 hours. Then he went to the club that night and put on a show, the likes of which I had never seen before in country music.

He just exploded on stage and the place was rockin'. It was like a rock show only with country music.

It was at that time when Garth had the song "Much To Young To Feel This Damn Old". His next single "If Tomorrow Never Comes" went straight to Number One on this day in 1989.
