Lubbock is one of the many cities across the nation still experiencing Flu-like illnesses. The CDC says the season's peak continues to last longer than normal. Now, more than ever, it's important to take preventative measures to protect yourself!

The flu is a respiratory illness. It is important to understand that since the Flu is a VIRUS and not a bacterial illness, there are only medications to help relieve symptoms, not to kill the virus or make it go away faster. So once you've got it, you've got and all you can do is let it run it's course.

That being said, I wanted to educate folks a little bit more about the flu.

Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or possibly their nose.

Now that you know what it is and how it spreads, here a few preventative tips to protect yourself from getting the Flu or from spreading it once you've got it.

If you have the Flu:

-STAY HOME! You're not proving how dedicated you are by staying at work and your co-workers will NOT thank you for getting them sick.

-Wash hands

-Cough into the bend of your elbow or shoulder or tissue.

-Warn people you have it so they know to be cautious around you.

-Change bedding once you show signs of lessening symptoms.

-Stay hydrated.

If you do not have the Flu:

-Wash your hands or use sanitizer religiously

-Avoid touching your face

-Continue taking daily vitamins

-Make it a point to know who's out of work with an illness and avoid their workspace

-Sanitize all community devices like work phones, shared keyboards, and doorknobs.

The CDC also says that the best way to prevent the Flu is by getting vaccinated each year.

Good luck Lubbock! Stay clean and stay healthy and, most of all, if you or someone you know is sick...STAY HOME!
